Maybe it showed up on a video call. Your jawline looks a little less defined than it did a few years ago, and the skin under your chin doesn’t sit the way it used to. Your eyelids feel heavier by late afternoon. You don’t want a different face, and you’re not ready to think about surgery. You just want to look like yourself on a good day.
If that sounds familiar, you’ve probably started researching “non-surgical face lifts” and found a wall of devices, injectables and bold promises. At Element Medical Aesthetics, questions about a non-surgical face lift in New Canaan are some of the most common we hear. So let’s cut through the noise: what non-surgical lifting can realistically do, how the main options differ, and how to tell which one fits your face.
Is There Really Such a Thing as a Non-Surgical Face Lift?
Yes and no. No treatment without an incision can reposition tissue the way a surgical facelift does. The American Academy of Dermatology is clear on this point: non-surgical tightening offers modest lifting and tightening, and even more advanced minimally invasive procedures can’t give you the results of a facelift or neck lift.
What non-surgical treatments can do is rebuild what time takes away: collagen, elastin, and the deeper support that keeps skin firm. The result is skin that looks firmer, smoother and more supported, without a “pulled” or “done” look. For many people, especially those with mild to moderate laxity, that’s exactly the goal.
Most of the “lifting” options at Element fall into three families. They work at different depths and on different causes of sagging.
How Does Sofwave Lift and Tighten Without Needles?
Sofwave uses ultrasound energy delivered into the mid-layer of the skin, where it stimulates your body’s own collagen production. Nothing breaks the skin’s surface. Sofwave is FDA-cleared to lift the eyebrow and lax tissue under the chin and on the neck, and to improve facial lines and wrinkles.
What it’s best for: early jowling, a softening jawline, neck laxity and crepey neck skin, brow heaviness, and preventative care for collagen loss.
What to expect: a topical numbing cream may be applied first. Afterward, any mild redness or swelling typically resolves within a few hours, and most patients return to normal activities right away. Some improvement may be visible within several weeks, but results keep developing over the following three to six months as new collagen forms.
Who it suits: someone with a full calendar who can’t take a week off and would rather no one asks, “What did you have done?”
How Is RF Microneedling Different From Sofwave?
Genius RF microneedling works on firmness too, but it takes a different path. Ultra-fine needles reach a precise depth and deliver radiofrequency heat directly into the dermis. That pairs collagen stimulation with resurfacing benefits Sofwave doesn’t offer. (For a deeper look, see our complete guide to Genius RF microneedling in New Canaan.)
What it’s best for: laxity that comes with texture concerns, such as acne scars, enlarged pores, crepey skin, and fine lines and wrinkles.
What to expect: numbing cream beforehand, then redness, mild swelling and a sunburn-like feeling for roughly one to three days. A series of treatments is typically recommended.
Who it suits: someone who wants firmer skin and smoother texture, and can plan around a few social days off.
If Sofwave is about lift and RF microneedling is about lift plus skin quality, the third family addresses something neither device can replace: lost volume.
When Is Sagging Actually Volume Loss?
This is the question that changes most treatment plans. As we age, it’s not only the skin that changes. Fat pads shrink and shift, and the deeper structure of the face loses support. When the cheeks flatten, the skin above the jawline has less to rest on, so it folds and sags. Tightening the skin alone won’t fully correct that.
That’s where biostimulators and regenerative injectables come in. Rather than just adding filler, they prompt your body to rebuild its own support: collagen, or in Renuva’s case, fat.
- Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) gradually rebuilds the skin’s structural foundation. It’s done as a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, with results appearing over three to six months and lasting two years or longer for many patients.
- Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) gives immediate contour along the jawline, chin and cheeks while stimulating collagen over time. In a hyperdiluted form, it improves thin, crepey skin on the neck and chest.
- Renuva works differently. Instead of collagen, it helps your body restore its own fat. It’s a purified adipose (fat) matrix that acts as a scaffold in areas where fat has been lost, such as the temples or midface. Over three to six months, the matrix is gradually absorbed and replaced with your own tissue, so the new volume looks soft and natural. Downtime is usually minimal, with some mild swelling or bruising, and some patients benefit from more than one session.
Because aging usually involves both collagen loss and fat loss, Renuva and Sculptra are sometimes used together to rebuild more than one layer of the face. Biostimulators and Renuva are a particularly good fit if your face has thinned from aging or weight loss. We cover that in more depth on our volume loss and GLP-1 facial changes page and in our earlier post, What Are Biostimulators?
Which Option Is Right for You?
Here’s a simplified way to think about it:
- Mostly loose skin along the jaw, under the chin or at the brow, and you want no downtime: Sofwave is often the starting point.
- Laxity plus texture, scarring or crepiness: Genius RF microneedling may do more for you.
- Hollowing in the cheeks or temples, or a face that looks thinner or more tired: biostimulators or Renuva address the underlying support, depending on whether it’s mainly collagen or fat that’s been lost.
- A combination of the three: this is often the answer, and it’s the reason a layered plan often works better than any single treatment. Sofwave, for example, is commonly paired with Sculptra, Radiesse or Genius for more comprehensive rejuvenation.
The AAD also notes that people tend to get the best results from skin tightening when they have a small amount of sagging, maintain a stable weight, protect their skin from the sun, and don’t smoke. If you have a lot of loose skin, tightening may not help much. In that case, we’ll tell you honestly, and a conversation with a surgeon may serve you better than another device.
What About Men?
Non-surgical lifting is increasingly popular with men who want to look rested and sharp without anything that changes their expression. A defined jawline and firmer neck tend to matter most, so Sofwave and Radiesse often come up in those conversations. Our practical guide to aesthetic treatments for men goes deeper.
Why Your Plan Matters More Than the Device
It’s easy to shop for lifting by device name. But the most important decision isn’t Sofwave versus Genius versus Sculptra. It’s an accurate read of why your face is changing, and a plan that matches how much change you actually want.
Merry Thornton, PA, and our team bring more than a decade of experience in dermatology and aesthetics. We’d rather build gradual, natural results over time than chase a dramatic change in one session. Sometimes the right plan is one treatment. Sometimes it’s a sequence over a year. Sometimes the right answer is “not yet,” and you’ll hear that from us, too. You can explore every option on our skin laxity, sagging and crepey skin page and our lasers and skin tightening overview.
