Search for a facial and you’ll find dozens of options: HydraFacial, signature facials, dermaplaning, peels, lymphatic drainage, LED. The names change, the promises sound similar, and most descriptions are written to sell rather than to help you choose.
At Element Medical Aesthetics, we’d rather you choose well than choose quickly. This guide explains how our facials in New Canaan differ, what each is designed to do, and when a facial isn’t the right tool at all.
What Is a HydraFacial, and How Is It Different From a Traditional Facial?
A HydraFacial is a device-based treatment. It uses suction and exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and extract impurities, while delivering cleansing, hydrating and moisturizing serums to the skin. It’s non-irritating, there is no downtime, and it suits all skin types. Many people notice a fresh, glowing look right after.
A traditional facial, like our Elemental Facial, is different in approach. It isn’t a fixed protocol. It’s customized at the time of your visit based on what your skin needs that day, so no two sessions are identical. Your first visit is a full 60 minutes so we can assess your skin properly and recommend what comes next.
A simple way to think about it: the HydraFacial is a consistent, efficient reset. The Elemental Facial is a personalized assessment with hands-on care.
Which HydraFacial Is Right for You: Signature, Deluxe or Platinum?
We offer three levels, and each builds on the one before it:
- Signature HydraFacial (30 minutes): cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration, with a neck and shoulder massage. A good starting point, or a monthly maintenance option.
- Deluxe HydraFacial (45 minutes): everything in the Signature, plus a corrective booster chosen for your concern, such as pigmentation, dehydration, lines or wrinkles, along with blue and red LED light therapy to target oil, congestion, aging and inflammation.
- Platinum HydraFacial (60 minutes): the Deluxe, plus facial lymphatic drainage massage, which is known to reduce puffiness and redness and gives a more sculpted look.
If you’re unsure, the Signature is a gentle way to see how your skin responds. If you have a specific concern, the Deluxe’s booster is where the personalization happens.
When Does Dermaplaning or Lymphatic Drainage Make Sense?
Two of our facial add-ons are also available on their own:
- Dermaplaning is a non-invasive treatment that gently removes dead skin cells and fine facial hair with a scalpel, leaving skin brighter and smoother. It can be added to any facial. Because it’s a form of exfoliation, mention it to us if you use retinoids or have sensitive skin.
- Facial lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle massage that helps de-puff, supports circulation and can soften the look of dark circles and fine lines. It’s a good choice when your skin looks tired or congested rather than damaged.
Both can be layered onto a facial, which is often more useful than booking a separate appointment.
How Often Should You Exfoliate or Get a Facial?
More isn’t better. The American Academy of Dermatology advises matching exfoliation to your skin type. Dry, sensitive or acne-prone skin may do best with gentler methods, and people with darker skin tones or a tendency toward dark spots should avoid aggressive exfoliation, which can increase pigmentation. Harvard Health similarly notes that skin needs time to repair between exfoliation sessions, so daily exfoliation isn’t recommended.
For most people, a professional facial about once a month is a reasonable rhythm, though we’ll tailor that to you. If you use prescription retinoids, tell your provider before booking, since they can make skin more reactive.
Can a Facial Treat Acne, Redness, Pigmentation or Fine Lines?
A facial can improve how skin looks and feels, and it supports a healthy routine. But some concerns need a different tool, and we’ll tell you so rather than sell you a series of facials that won’t get you there:
- Persistent redness or rosacea: see our rosacea and redness treatment options.
- Acne: a facial can help with congestion, but ongoing breakouts deserve a plan. See acne treatment in New Canaan.
- Enlarged pores and uneven texture: these often respond better to RF microneedling or chemical peels. Read about enlarged pores and uneven skin texture.
- Sun spots and pigmentation: IPL is designed for this. See sun damage treatment.
- Fine lines and wrinkles: facials can hydrate and soften their appearance, but fine lines and wrinkles are usually addressed with other treatments.
- Loosening skin: that’s a job for energy-based treatments. See skin laxity treatment or Sofwave.
Think of facials as the foundation of an intentional skin plan. They keep skin clear, hydrated and well cared for, and they pair well with deeper treatments when you’re ready for them.
