You lost weight, or you simply turned 45, and now the face in the mirror looks a little flatter than the one you remember. The temples have a slight hollow. The cheeks sit lower or look thinner. Your hands show more tendons and veins than they used to. You haven’t developed new lines so much as lost something underneath them.
That “something” is often fat. And it’s one of the least-discussed parts of aging. At Element Medical Aesthetics, one of the questions we hear most is some version of “what actually replaces lost volume, rather than just filling it?” This guide explains Renuva, a regenerative option we offer in New Canaan, including what it treats, how it differs from Sculptra and filler, and who it isn’t for.
What Is Renuva, and How Does It Work?
Renuva is a regenerative injectable made from a purified adipose-derived (fat-tissue) extracellular matrix. Think of it as a scaffold. It’s injected into the existing fat layer beneath the skin, in areas where fat has diminished. Cells from the surrounding tissue move into that framework and begin forming new fat cells. Over time the matrix is gradually absorbed, and what remains is your own tissue.
That’s the key difference from a traditional filler, which adds temporary volume by occupying space. Renuva is designed to support your body in rebuilding volume itself, which is why results develop gradually, over roughly three to six months, rather than the same day.
What does the evidence say? Published research on this class of product, injectable allograft adipose matrix, is still limited. A 2019 study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery examined it in an animal model and in a small pilot group of 15 patients treated in the wrist and hand. The authors reported that the matrix integrated with the surrounding tissue and supported adipogenic (fat-forming) remodeling. It’s encouraging, but it’s a small study, and we’d rather tell you that plainly than oversell it. Renuva is also a human tissue product rather than a device or a conventional filler, so we won’t describe it as FDA-cleared or approved.
What Problems Can Renuva Treat?
Renuva is best suited to areas where fat has been lost, rather than areas where skin has simply loosened. Common treatment areas include:
- Temple hollowing, which can make the upper face look more angular or tired
- Midface volume loss, where the cheeks flatten and the area beneath the eyes looks more shadowed
- Smile lines and contour irregularities where soft tissue has thinned
- The hands, where fat loss makes veins and tendons more prominent
- Small contour defects on the face or body
- Volume lost after weight change, including facial changes some people notice after significant weight loss
If you’re in that last group, our page on volume loss and GLP-1 facial changes walks through how we think about it. Rapid weight loss can leave the body feeling healthy and the face feeling drawn. We don’t see that as a reason to overfill. We look at what has actually changed, what still looks balanced, and where support can be restored thoughtfully.
How Is Renuva Different From Sculptra and Filler?
This is the comparison most patients ask us to explain, so here it is in plain terms.
- Renuva is designed to help your body regenerate fat. It’s best for areas that have lost soft-tissue volume.
- Sculptra stimulates your own collagen. It improves skin structure, support and thickness, and suits more general thinning.
- Radiesse provides some immediate structure while also stimulating collagen, often along the jawline and cheeks.
- Hyaluronic acid filler gives immediate, adjustable volume and is useful for specific lines, lips and contours.
Aging usually involves several of these layers at once: fat, collagen and skin quality. So the answer is often a combination rather than a single product. Our earlier guide, What Are Biostimulators?, covers the collagen side, and our post on the non-surgical face lift options shows how these treatments fit together with tightening devices.
What Is the Treatment Like?
Renuva is performed in our office, and a session typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. Mild swelling or bruising is possible afterward, and downtime is usually minimal. Because the process relies on your body’s own response, you won’t see the final result right away. Changes build gradually over about three to six months as new tissue forms. Some patients benefit from more than one session, and we’ll tell you at the consultation what’s realistic for your anatomy.
Individual results vary, and no one can promise a specific outcome. What we can promise is an honest assessment.
Who Is a Good Candidate (and Who Might Not Be)?
Renuva tends to be a good fit if you:
- Notice hollowing in the temples or midface
- Have lost soft-tissue fullness through aging or weight change
- Prefer a gradual, biologically driven approach over an immediate change
- Want subtle restoration rather than a new shape
It may not be the right first step if your main concern is loose skin rather than lost volume. In that case, tightening with Sofwave or Genius RF microneedling may address what you’re seeing better, and we’ll say so. If you’d like to look at your options more broadly, our lasers and skin tightening overview is a good place to start. And if you’re a man who wants a subtler, more natural look, our guide to aesthetic treatments for men covers how we approach it.
Why Does the Plan Matter More Than the Product?
It’s tempting to shop by product name. But the most important question isn’t “Renuva or Sculptra?” It’s “what has actually changed in my face, and how much of that do I want to address?”
Merry Thornton, PA, and the Element team bring more than a decade of experience in dermatology and aesthetics. We would rather build gradually and keep your features recognizably yours than chase a dramatic change. Sometimes the right plan is one treatment. Sometimes it’s a sequence over a year. And sometimes the honest answer is “not yet.” You can browse everything we offer in regenerative care on our regenerative treatments page.
